BAFTA 2016: All the Smoke Screen reviews of the nominees and winners

The Revenant was this year’s big winner at BAFTA

The BAFTAs have been and gone for this year, leaving the usual accusations of political incorrectness in the on-stage gags, and the moans about the lack of drunken antics compared to the more boozy Golden Globes, in their wake. It would be hard to argue that the results were surprising. Overall, The Revenant, from Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu, continued its path to domination at the Oscars with four wins, including nabbing the main prizes of best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, best director and best film. Was it deserving? Smoke Screen gave the film four stars, but noted the film succeeded more as a spectacle of technical and physical achievement than a deeply resonant emotional experience. There were better films this year.

Sweeping up the technical prizes in second place as expected was Mad Max: Fury Road (hair and make up, editing, costume design and production design). If there was a notable loser, it was Carol from Todd Haynes, despite being the critical darling of last year it went home empty-handed, which feels wrong somehow. And this was yet another year where the quality of the best animated film award- Pixar’s Inside Out– really raised the question as to why this should not have been allowed to compete in the best film category. It was Smoke Screen’s second favourite film of 2015. Brie Larson however was well-rewarded with a best actress award for her impressive turn in the drama Room.
