Oscar-winning filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski is one of the most distinctive directors working today: you can read the Smoke Screen review of his Oscar-winning drama IDA here. In this special masterclass, Pawel will be in conversation with Marc Isaacs, Lecturer in Documentary Practice at Royal Holloway, University of London, who worked as Pawel’s assistant on Twockers and Last Resort. Together they will discuss Pawel’s early documentary films and the influence they had on his fiction films, and provide a unique insight into his working methods.
Pawel Pawlikowski’s films include Ida (2013) and Last Resort (2000), his documentaries include Twockers (1998), Tripping with Zhirinovsky (1994), Serbian Epics (1992), Dostoevsky’s Travels (1991) and From Moscow to Pietushki (1990).
Marc Isaacs’ has made more than 10 creative documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4. His films have won Grierson, Royal Television Society and BAFTA awards as well as numerous international film festival prizes. His films include The Road: A Story of Life & Death (2012), All White in Barking (2007) and Calais: The Last Border (2003). He is currently a Lecturer in Documentary Practice at Royal Holloway, University of London.
