Over 100 cinemagoers voted in a poll to help Deptford Cinema choose a film to applaud the contributions of actors of colour this last year. That included the likes of Second Coming, Straight Outta Compton, Girlhood, Dope, and Magic Mike XXL. But the winning film, which will screen on February 28, is TANGERINE (which was actually Smoke Screen’s top film of 2015).
TANGERINE follows two friends, the dramatic Cyndi who’s just been released from prison, and the long suffering Alexandra over one Christmas Eve as they hunt down Cyndi’s boyfriend and the girl he’s been sleeping with. Featuring the innovative use of an iPhone to shoot the entire film, and with brilliant performances from Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Tangerine is unlike any other films.
