September is Scalarama month in London and across the UK, as a variety of cinemas, film clubs and societies come together to screen cult classics and lost gems in the spirit of the old Scala cinema that once existed in Kings' Cross. Just a few of the highlights are below, but check the Scalarama site for the full listings and a handy location-based planner.
The European Cinema Classics night at the arts venue The Horse Hospital will showcase some of the most distinctive titles from the 1960s and ’70s, from three of the great European national cinemas, provided by world cinema DVD label Second Run. Entry is by (necessary) donation: £5 or as much as you care to give, it all helps the Horse Hospital which is under threat of having its premises sold. DVDs of the works on show can be bought on site. Expect scifi visions, horror, fairytale, surrealism and Freudian symbolism! Details here.
The Trent Harris Double Bill on the 12 and 13th September presents the works of one of America's truly independent filmmakers, including his cult film series The Beaver Trilogy, which features an early appearance on film of Sean Penn, as well as Back to the Future's Crispin Glover in a combination of short doc/re-enactment/fiction shorts. Also screening are Luna Mesa, Rubin and Ed, and Plan 10 From Outer Space. Details here.
Horror author, film critic, broadcaster and all-round genre and cult film/TV expert Kim Newman is the perfect guide to The Visitor, in which John Huston stars as an intergalactic warrior who joins a cosmic Christ figure (Franco Nero) in battle against a demonic 8-year-old girl, and her pet hawk…
