It is time to proverbially split those proverbial sides as the BFI leaves London Film Festival behind and embraces the funny side of life. The last quarter of 2018 at BFI Southbank sees the launch of their 2018 blockbuster season COMEDY GENIUS. The season launches on 23 October with none other than Jane Fonda appearing in person to celebrate the re-release of her acclaimed workplace sexism fightback comedy 9 to 5. The programme is so vast there is only space below for a few highlights from the first announced batch of screenings and events:

  • 16 NOV onwards - Extended run re-release of 9 to 5 (Colin Higgins, 1980)

  • 2 NOV onwards - Extended run re-release of Some Like it Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959)

  • 6 NOV, 18:10 – SCREEN EPIPHANY: Felicity Kendal introduces Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, 1959) / Onstage: actor Felicity Kendal

  • 9 NOV, 18:00 – SCREENING + Q&A: Coming to America (John Landis, 1988) / Onstage: director John Landis and Costume Designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis

  • 11 NOV, 14:30 – SCREENING + INTRO: The Pink Panther Strikes Again (Blake Edwards, 1976) / Onstage: introduction by actor and author David Walliams

  • 16 NOV, 20:30 – SCREEN EPIPHANY: Joe Thomas introduces The Big Lebowski (The Coen Brothers, 1998) / Onstage: actor Joe Thomas 

  • 17 NOV, 15:00 – SPECIAL EVENT: The Black Comedy Revolution

  • 22 NOV, 18:10 – SCREENING + INTRO: This is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984) / Onstage: actor and comedian Morwenna Banks

  • 29 NOV, 16:00 – SPECIAL EVENT: ICO Archive Screening Day: Women In Silent Film Comedy

  • 9 DEC, 18:45- SCREENING: Open All Night (aka One Parisian Night) + intro by BFI curator Bryony Dixon

  • 14 DEC, 20:45 EVENT: Comedians Cinema Club presents Groundhog Day + live performance
