Art of Protest Film Season (29th March -22 April)


This upcoming season films devoted to the intersection of art, cinema and protest is an ideal opportunity to visit the new Bertha DocHouse cinema, which occupies a dedicated screen in the newly revamped Curzon Bloomsbury. 

Every Sunday and Wednesday. A new season of documentaries at the Bertha DocHouse Cinema exploring film, art and protest. From a group of death defying graffiti artists in Sao Paolo to South Africa's radical art movement and hopes of keeping the revolution alive in Egypt, Art of Protest highlights the immediate and lasting impact of these creative interventions.

Sao Paolo's Sabao Favela is a sprawling concrete jungle in the heart of the city. Home to four friends - Djan, William, Ricardo and Biscoito whose unique form of pixacao (Brazilian graffiti) is about to gain them worldwide attention. Dramatically shot, this is an adrenaline fuelled, breath-taking debut from Amir Escandari.

Art War tells the story of the young Egyptians inspired by the Arab Spring who, through graffiti, murals and music, try to salvage their revolution. The film shows the outburst of creativity following Mubarak's fall in 2011, and demonstrates how their impassioned work came to be used as a weapon to spread a political message.

Eccentric French shopkeeper-turned-doc-maker Thierry Guetta attempts to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner - with spectacular results. Banksy's filmmaking debut is an incendiary story of low-level criminality, companionship and incompetence.
